The Others

Director: Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 1.0

I have nothing against haunted houses or heavy shadows, but I couldn't shake my memory of the masterful Deborah Kerr film The Innocents, which this cannot come close to replicating. Save for the Amenábar Twist at the very end (which re-captured my lost attention), the protracted narrative of a mother and her children who are convinced their home has ghosts in it offers little to most viewers other than precise camera movements and half-hearted scare tactics. I always viewed The Sixth Sense as being a film about 'our' spiritual crisis as much as a play on childhood fears of being different (and of the ominous 'things under the bed') - this, on the other hand, is an exercise in aesthetics.
