The Lady With the Dog (1960) review

While on vacation in Yalta, businessman Dimitri (Aleksey Batalov) has an affair with Anna (Iya Savvina) and when they return home to their spouses, they can't stop thinking about each other.  I don't say this often (if ever) but I really regret actually watching this, since the Anton Chekhov story is one of my all-time favorites and this adaptation does him no favors: the black and white cinematography is good, but it's belabored and stiff and diminishes the beauty of the source.  Trying to "pad" a short piece into a feature is always a risky endeavor, and there is a lot of lingering close-ups and wasted time.
