Project Power
Director: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.5
A new drug is making its way around New Orleans called "Power" that turns the individual taking it into one of the Fantastic Four (more or less) and former soldier Art (Jamie Foxx) and NOPD officer Frank (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are out to find who's manufacturing and distributing it (and shut it down). It brings back uncomfortable memories of 2017's Bright - another police procedural with sci-fi elements - and while Foxx and JGL can make most anything watchable (same as Will Smith), there's an element of fatigue in it, like the story is going through the motions without even considering whether or not what they're doing is fresh or even mildly compelling (as it turns out, Art's special ability is to turn into Vanya Hargreeves from The Umbrella Academy). Also, being a Netflix production, there's a self-conscious need to bring up social justice issues to pat themselves and the audience on the back....
