From Hell

Director: Allen and Albert Hughes
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 0.5

How the Hughes Brothers can turn what is potentially the most fascinating - and influentially sick - story from the past century plus into sleep-inducing monotony is a complete mystery. Their filmmaking career has slid since their promising debut Menace II Society, which some dismissed as a sequel to Boyz in the Hood but I thought had enough panache and passion to distinguish itself as an individual work. Two hours, though, is simply too too long in this case - and who thought of casting Heather Graham as Mary Kelly (who else was under consideration? what is with her 'accent?')? Johnny Depp's last tolerable movie is still Sleepy Hollow (the flaws of From Hell are not at all his, though).
