Navy Captain Krause (Tom Hanks) wants to marry Evelyn (Elisabeth Shue), but first has to keep a bunch of kids on his destroyer calm and escort an convoy to safety during the Battle of the Atlantic, with German unterseeboots constantly threatening to blow him - and them - up. There's almost constant turmoil happening - and a lot of naval jargon being thrown out, with Hanks-as-screenwriter doing his research - so there's never a down moment, but that's also its chief problem: with all the action, there's no character development, so the audience never learns anything about the participants (we do know Krause is quite familiar with Proverbs 3:6). The intrusive radio transmissions from bad guy Grey Wolf (voiced by Thomas Kretschmann) sound like Dana Carvey working on his accent, so that should have been re-written and fixed in post....
