The Vast of Night

Director: Andrew Patterson
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 1.5

A disc jockey (Jake Horowitz) and a switchboard operator (Sierra McCormick) hear strange noises coming through the phone lines, play them on the air and get a phone call from a man who has a story about UFOs ... it turns out, the space critters are back and looming over New Mexico.  The nod to Rod Serling is apparent - it even starts with a retro TV in case you wouldn't figure it out - but he would have scrapped this unsurprising script for dawdling too much and completely fumbling the ending in which there ... really isn't a twist at all (does Patterson know that The Twilight Zone episodes had clever conclusions?).  When Horowitz and McCormick talk to the old lady I kept waiting for her to mention chemtrails and how the Earth is flat and how birds aren't real, but they cut off before those big reveals....
