Altered Carbon: Resleeved
Director: Takeru Nakajima and Yoshiyuki Okada
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.5
Animated companion piece to the cult sci-fi show Altered Carbon (on Netflix) once again centers around soldier Takeshi Kovacs (last of a group of elite fighters known as the Envoys) who is summoned to protect a little girl who possesses rare tattooing abilities but is wanted by the Yakuza. It tries to bring those not familiar with the show up-to-date with the terminology and lore - "sleeves" are bodies inhabited by "stacks" (which contain something akin to the "soul") - although there isn't much of a story (and the CGI is spotty): it's mostly a braindead series of chained-together - and very gory - action scenes. If anything, I hope it encourages people to watch the series itself, which may get a little too cute with the plotting and technical inventions but is still highly entertaining (I was hoping Poe or Quell would make an appearance in this, but at least Takeshi's sister Rei is back).
