The Way Back
Director: Gavin O'Connor
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.0
An alcoholic construction worker (Ben Affleck) - who used to be a basketball star as a youth - gets asked to coach his old high school's not-so-good team, but he's still haunted by tragedies in his past. From the very beginning anyone could tell where it's going to go: at first he's apathetic, the team doesn't play well, he gets frustrated and starts coaching them up, he magically quits drinking, the team starts winning, coach slips up and goes on a binge, gets fired and then the team wins the Championship because they were So Inspired By Him. Affleck, in real life, has battled the bottle which probably made him think this was a worthwhile project for him - and he already worked with O'Connor on The Accountant - but the screenplay doesn't have one original idea floating around it.
