Spenser Confidential
Director: Peter Berg
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.0
Formerly incarcerated ex-cop Spenser (Mark Wahlberg) - who beat up his former boss, suspecting him of corruption - gets out of prison and goes and lives with his Pop (Alan Arkin), but evil behavior among the Boston Police force (his boss and a colleague are killed) turns him into something of a gumshoe. I'm sure Berg is aware that Andy Samberg's perfect impersonation of Wahlberg on Saturday Night Live ("Hey chicken, how's it hanging?") - you know, the tough guy who tries very hard to be friendly - so there's a lot of Mark's typical mugging in there ... not to mention several embarrassing moments (the scene in the bathroom with comedienne Iliza Shlesinger being the worst), plot holes, Bokeem Woodbine doing a variation of his character from Fargo and watching Post Malone try to act (it's ... not pleasant). It knows it's a throwaway movie ... but since when is that a good thing?
