Spider-Man

Director: Sam Raimi
Year Released: 2002
Rating: 0.5

Ever see the TV show Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers? That's what this is: awkward camp with a grotesque budget, laughably silly suits and "HA HA! I'll kill you now!" dialogue. It's an unimaginative filmization of the comic - screenwriter Koepp and Sam Raimi's only real innovation is the inclusion of an all-too-brief wrestling sequence featuring Randy Savage and Bruce Campbell (if you're going to go all the way, you need Bruce to be there). The bright critical reception is stunning to me - if everyone were fawning over truly visionary (albeit flawed) works like the anime Metropolis I'd feel a little more relieved. I'm with Roger Ebert (he's got a great eye for visuals): the CGI is awful.
