The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) review

The cuddly urban-dwelling animals from the first movie are taken out of their "comfort zones" in this less-than-clever sequel: dogs Max (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) spend a vacation in the countryside with wise ol' Rooster (Harrison Ford), perky Gidget (Jenny Slate) has to go undercover as a cat to retrieve a lost toy (Busy Bee!) and Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) convinces adorable bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) to help her save a tiger from the evil Russians (of course, it would be that country again ... remember the 80's?).  The target audience won't remember Saturday Morning Cartoons but this is basically three episodes of a lower-grade Tiny Toon Adventures pieced together, complete with a message aimed at jittery Max: stop worrying so much and be bold (we all have an Inner Rooster).  The real star is the elderly Cat Lady, who isn't concerned with the repercussions of vehicle homicide: must be the T. Gondii doing its thing.
