Santa Sangre
Director: Alejandro Jodorowsky
Year Released: 1989
Rating: 3.0
I find it hard to speak negatively of Jodorowsky's work - his inventiveness is rarely paralleled, and I can't say no to Jungian symbolism - but the acting in this later picture of his almost completely turned me off (though not to the point where I'd dissuade you from seeing this), which is really something considering that so much of it is beautiful dream imagery that few filmmakers would dare use (or have the imaginations to conjure). Casting his sons for the lead characters (and Blanca Guerra as the mother) may not have been the wisest from a dramatic standpoint, although the typically bizarre Jodorowsky touches still shine through. How about that elephant?
