Viva Maria!

Director: Louis Malle
Year Released: 1965
Rating: 1.0

Bardot and Moreau are two feminist trailblazers in this pre-Austin Powers, pre-Thelma & Louise campy joke/girl buddy movie. Most of the stabs at humor are lame - the constant target of Malle's attack is South America's notorious cruelty towards its people - and I cringed every time Bardot said something (Moreau, as always, holds her own). Goes on far longer than expected, but the last twenty minutes do have a few clever set-ups.
