I Lost My Body
Director: Jérémy Clapin
Year Released: 2019

Pizza delivery boy Naoufel hears the voice of Gabrielle over the intercom when he's late with her order and becomes fascinated with her, going so far as to work for her sick uncle as a woodworking apprentice; elsewhere in the city, a severed hand - that has a mole on it just like Naoufel - is busy skittering around (and trying to dodge hazards like trains, rats and dogs) seemingly determined to find its owner. The animation in this is very interesting - the hand is wonderfully rendered while elsewhere it can be (intentionally) a little choppy - but I don't think the cinematic use of 'magical realism' works in this instance: the scenes with Naoufel trying to win over Gabrielle by building her wooden igloo (he sure learned that ... a little too quickly) don't really mesh with the disembodied hand parts, which feel like they came out of another movie with a different tone altogether. Clapin said it's about "destiny and resilience" and to "dare do something unusual" ... is he implying lopping off old Righty with a jigsaw will fix a broken life?
