Brittany Runs a Marathon

Director: Paul Downs Colaizzo
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 2.0

Brittany (Jillian Bell) undergoes a personal crisis when she's told by her doctor that she needs to lose weight - she takes that advice to the extreme and decides she not only wants to shed pounds, she wants to run in (and finish) the New York City Marathon (all 26.22 miles of it).  It's based on a true story and probably means well as a visual 'motivational speech' to get women to love their bodies more and respect themselves (self-care is vital), but the truth is that Bell's character is mostly a jerk for a good deal of the running time - she cuts people down and is difficult to deal with - and the movie mistakenly thinks that completing a race is going to totally eliminate self-loathing ("Live! Laugh! Love!").  I half expected Jillian Michaels to appear at some point to rant about the keto diet and throw a medicine ball at Brittany, but that would have gone against its placating tone.
