The Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years
Director: Penelope Spheeris
Year Released: 1988
Rating: 3.0
The second part of Spheeris' Decline trilogy follows the same 'formula' as the first, except this time with the focus on hard rock and heavy metal bands concentrated in the Los Angeles area, like Poison, Aerosmith, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Faster Pussycat and the delightful Lemmy of Motörhead. The mood is mostly the same as the first - lots of bros talking about their prowess in the bedroom, the size of their manhood, bragging about how much they can drink - and she even has an interview with Ozzy Osbourne as he tries to make breakfast (just like Darby!). Metal fans, like punk fans, really get into character - the big hair, the makeup, the leather, the 'sign of the horns' (she interviews a lady who claims they're all devil worshipers). There is some genuinely good advice scattered throughout (from Lemmy, especially) and the caution against abusing drugs will always be relevant. I had to double check afterwards if Chris Holmes (guitarist from W.A.S.P.), after appearing to chug bottles of Smirnoff while floating on an inflatable raft in his pool with his mother nearby, was still ... around. He's fine, it was just water: being metal doesn't always mean you have to be honest.
