Shazam!
Director: David F. Sandberg
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 1.5
Orphan Billy (Asher Angel) - living in a group home with other misfits - goes looking for the mother who abandoned him and just so happens to 'unlock' a secret portal where he meets an old wizard (Djimon Hounsou) who grants him every single super-power you can think of to stop rogue physicist Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong). Just as there has been an inordinate number of superhero movies there have been several parodies, like Marvel's Deadpool (which at least had the guts to go for the R-rating) and Super and Kick-Ass, and there isn't much in this particular DC release to make it truly stand out in any special way: if you find Zachary Levi - who looks a little like Jimmy Fallon - having an adult body but acting like an awe-struck teenage boy to be amusing (just like Fallon) then it just might work for you. Otherwise, it goes the Batman route of mining parentless kids for sympathy points and throws in some rich bullies to torment crippled Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) for that little extra 'touch.
