The Nun

Director: Corin Hardy
Year Released: 2018
Rating: 1.5

As a "side note" in The Conjuring series, this has the Vatican sending a "fixer," Father Burke (Demián Bichir), and meek Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) to some remote part of Romania to look into why a nun committed suicide there ... and face-off against a demonic spirit that may have taught me in grade school. While it is just another chop-shop horror movie with the expected Boo! Moments and a lot of soiled costumes (check out those dirty habits), it at least does have two leads who are likeable - Bichir's grizzled weariness goes well with Farmiga's virginal fortitude - and it did startle me at least twice, which is more than I can say for a lot of these things. It must be a breeze working on a script for a horror movie: "All right, so this monster pops out and attacks this character, and then character swats at it, and then its arm falls off and it disappears. Then, another one pops out and then it vanishes just like before! CUT TO: ...."
