A Wrinkle in Time
Director: Ava DuVernay
Year Released: 2018

With their Dad, Mr. Murry (Chris Pine), having vanished into the universe after tinkering around with a tesseract, his kids Meg (Storm Reid) and Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), with the cosmic assistance of Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) set out to bring him back to Earth. Madeleine L'Engle's novel - the first in a trilogy - was one of my favorites as a child, but DuVernay manages to demystify the author's interest in Christianity and science and make it about a bullied girl who keeps pushing people away (boo hoo), and it isn't helping her any that the costumes look like they were stolen from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the CGI isn't immersive (the performers often look like they're acting in front of a projection ... even though Disney was paying the bills). "Maybe it's not the best idea to have your 'villain' be voiced by an arrogant five-year-old," —Me, American.
