Next Gen (2018) review

Lil punk Mai (voiced by Charlyne Yi) accidentally meets prototype super robot 7723 (John Krasinski) and they become good chums, but he has a memory leak issue ... and humankind's existence is being threatened by Justin Pin (Jason Sudeikis), who's a kind of Steve Jobs-turned-monster (while David Cross' Dr. Rice is Steve Wozniak). The story is a mindless rehash of Big Hero 6 (which came out in 2014) and there isn't much in the way of new ideas being presented (it tries to 'get emotional' when 7723 has to delete his past to reactivate his weapons ... and Mai has Dad Issues), but the CGI is very good (Jack Ma's Amazon-wannabe Alibaba was one of the producers) and there are some cute bits, like Michael Peña's foul-mouthed (but censored) pup Momo and the adorable emoji-like faces on the robots (they turn bright red when they're about to explode). Kids should find it to be a passable way to spend an evening, but between us adults: this is about the Singularity right? And how gizmos we'll eventually build are going to take over? We should all be listening to Elon.
