Writer Juliet (Lily James) becomes fascinated by what took place on the island of Guernsey during World War II, particularly the development of the title group of book lovers who had to deal with the Nazis, and uncover whatever happened to one of their members, Elizabeth (Jessica Brown Findlay), who vanished and left behind a daughter. It's the kind of weak middlebrow movie for people who actually do belong to 'book clubs' not for the love of literature but to appear 'smart' and 'worldly' (but mainly mingle and gossip) - as soon as Juliet lands on the 'quaint' island you know she'll fall in love with the beaches and cliffs and ditch slick Mr. New York (Glen Powell) for Michiel Huisman's pig farmer/bibliophile. James is adequate, I guess, but most of the characters are sugary scoops of ice cream, save the religious zealot who never understood the teachings of the Bible (even the Nat-sees are treated as some background distraction).
