The Lure
Director: Agnieszka Smoczyńska
Year Released: 2015
Rating: 1.0
Killer mermaids Silver (Marta Mazurek) and Golden (Michalina Olszańska) are brought to a seedy nightclub for entertainment purposes, but Silver falls in love with a bassist (Jakub Gierszał) and undergoes an operation to become a human ... and he rejects her (it's ever so loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid). I get that Smoczyńska is mining personal problems with this - and also talking about sex trafficking - but the combination of music video-style looking-right-into-the-camera singing sections combined with 'horror' just makes it seem tacky and unbalanced: a tonal wreck. Like De Palma's equally flawed Phantom of the Paradise, it's sure to find a cult audience, who are more likely to accept it for being 'noxious and nasty' (and poorly written). Also: I'm not a surgeon but I'm fairly sure you can't split a body in half like that, without anesthesia, and have it survive. This ain't sushi we're talking about. Just saying.
