Spider-Man: Homecoming
Director: Jon Watts
Year Released: 2017
Rating: 2.0
Marvel staple Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) is, in this entry in that character's storyline, a sophomore in high school, interning with Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and out to shut down arms dealer Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton), who is supplying smuggled super-weapons to small-time thugs. The Webbed-Avenger-Meets-Degrassi setup is cute, I suppose, but it also succumbs to the typical comic-books-turned-into-movies pitfalls: it's too formulaic and contains too many glaring contrivances (and the CGI is a little spotty). Holland's perpetual optimism is an asset - as is the snappy repartee provided by Downey and Jon Favreau - although you have to wonder when moviegoers are going to finally tire of the superhero drivel they're being force-fed multiple times a year.
