Legally Blonde

Director: Robert Luketic
Year Released: 2001
Rating: 2.0

Sorority sister Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon) - who may act like a "dumb blonde" but is deceptively bright - chases her ex-boyfriend (Matthew Davis) to Harvard Law School in order to win him back, but he's involved with another girl (Selma Blair). Reese's quirky and indefatigable character lends it a good deal of charm - her "West Coast positivity" clashes with Harvard's "hip East Coast cynicism" - except the script itself is corny (especially when Elle tries to help her nail technician "land a man" or when she "discovers" things no one else does because of her Greek ties and knowledge of Italian fashion brands) and anti-elitist (anyone can get into an Ivy if they make a swimsuit video and try a little bit!). It wants to be Clueless but at least that movie had lasting jokes and core relationships/friendships that resonated.
