Kong: Skull Island

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts
Year Released: 2017
Rating: 1.0

Several stock characters - a "mad scientist" (John Goodman), a British mercenary (Tom Hiddleston), a jaded war photographer (Brie Larson), a hardcore Army Vet (Samuel L. Jackson), etc. - go to the mysterious Skull Island and run into King Kong (who's as big as a mountain) and a ton of oversized baddies. It tries to draw (political) parallels with the invasion of Vietnam (this is set in the early 1970's) but it's really just another ho-hum monster flick liberally stuffed with references to Jurassic Park and Platoon ... a movie made by people who only know movies (and oh, listen, "Time Has Come Today" is on the soundtrack!). The stinger alludes to the likes of Gojira and Godzilla showing up in what will ultimately be a string of equally blah follow-ups ... don't stay tuned.
