The Lego Batman Movie

Director: Chris McKay
Year Released: 2017
Rating: 3.0

Ultra-meta Batman film - the caped crusader is voiced by naturally gravelly Will Arnett - with all the DC comics characters in the shape of everyone's favorite Danish toys, including the Joker (Zach Galifianakis), Robin (Michael Cera) and Batgirl (Rosario Dawson). Normally I would sneer at just another full-length advertisement for children's playthings, but McKay and his team do something wonderful and fun with this: they give Batman a sense of humor, they lend the Batman-Joker 'rivalry' a semi-romantic spin (they need each other!) and, most importantly, they keep it visually dynamic (for the ADHD crowd and their fidget spinners). McKay's work on cult sketch comedy show Robot Chicken prepared him for this - it's a plastic avalanche of charming pop-culture references (and a reminder that Lobster Thermidor is a decadent but savory dish). Pew pew!
