Win It All
Director: Joe Swanberg
Year Released: 2017
Rating: 1.5
Another cranked-out Bros-with-Beards-and-Beer movie from the Swanberg Factory: in this case, down-and-out Eddie (Jake Johnson) is handed a bag of cash (and a rope and hammer!) from a man about to spend some time in jail, he gambles it away, goes to work for his brother (Joe Lo Truglio) cutting grass ... and then bets even more money, doubling his losses. Joe's merit as a filmmaker is his light touch and use of improvisation, but it works against himself when he needs to develop tension - Eddie experiences 'hardships' but he (and the movie) appear unfazed: even when the screen reads he's tens of thousands in the negative, it's only a matter of time before he recovers (even a timely heart attack is no problem ... just another Thing Dudes Go Through). Always remember: if you lose a ton of cash gambling and have a terrible addiction that's affecting your life and relationships ... just keep on gambling, you'll eventually break even!
