Masterminds

Director: Jared Hess
Year Released: 2016
Rating: 1.0

Armored car driver David (Zach Galifianakis) gets manipulated by co-worker Kelly (Kristen Wiig) and a friend of hers, Steve (Owen Wilson), to steal 17 million from his company ... except Steve plans on keeping all of the money and even sends an assassin (Jason Sudeikis) to take out David, who's hiding out in Mexico (most astonishing of all: this is based very loosely the Loomis Fargo Robbery back in 1997). Hess is very Christopher Guest-like in his treatment of his 'characters,' who are buffoonish and easy targets: Galifianakis wears goofy clothes (that Discman!) and says silly things while Kate McKinnon's department store clerk Jandice makes strange faces and poses (and shows off her vagina cream). It's an embarrassment for most everyone involved, save Sudeikis' sleazy killer (who made me chuckle) - dumb people acting dumb (aided by idiotic plot devices) is rarely engaging.
