Ghostbusters

Director: Paul Feig
Year Released: 2016

Reboot of the cult 80's comedy has scientists Erin (Kristen Wiig) and Abby (Melissa McCarthy) - along with MTA worker Patty (Leslie Jones) and tech nerd Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) - running around New York City battling a ghost invasion spurred on by a disgruntled custodian (Neil Casey). When this project was announced the Internet collectively pounced on it, acting like Feig and company were desecrating a film classic (the Bill Murray-Harold Ramis version is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's not The Best Years of Our Lives) - I originally suspected the malice was a knee-jerk reaction to the feminist-rethink, but as it turns out, it actually is atrocious (and uninspired). The comedy misses consistently (I didn't laugh once, not even at Chris Hemsworth's male ditz), the 'scare moments' are limp and I cringed every time Jones had to act sassy or McKinnon tried for 'quirky.' Even as homage it's pandering: Bill Murray, Annie Potts and Dan Aykroyd are haphazardly thrown in there for a few minutes ... and even Murray gets thrown out of a window (consider it a blessing, Bill).
