Deadpool
Director: Tim Miller
Year Released: 2016
Rating: 2.0
Sarcastic "anti-hero" Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), 'saved' from a terminal cancer diagnosis - and nearly killed - by Ajax (Ed Skrein), seeks revenge and, of course, tries to win back his beloved girlfriend Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). All the fourth-wall breaking and snide comments are fine in small doses, but it goes overboard - it's a try-way-too-damn-hard kind of popcorn movie - and the constant flip-flopping of time frames kills off forward progress. Reynolds is fine as the lead - he gets some help from eternally dead-pan T.J. Miller - but Marvel dipping into the R-rated material gives it the same feel as a slightly better Kick-Ass ... and that's not much of a compliment.
