In the Basement
Director: Ulrich Seidl
Year Released: 2014
Rating: 1.0
"Provocateur" Seidl wanders into the homes of several suburbanites in Austria, focusing on kinky types (a guy who claims to shoot "huge loads," a couple really into S&M), gun nuts, Hitler fanatics and a woman who kisses what look like dead babies that she keeps in storage boxes. I've said it before about Seidl and I'll say it again: he's not much of an intellect - who'd have thought people do strange things in their own homes? - and he tends to regard his subjects with an extreme amount of disdain: they're there to be ridiculed, not regarded as human beings with peculiar interests. It concludes with a naked woman stuck in a cage (hopefully by her own volition) and, prior to that, grotesque scenes of cock-and-ball torture which the director, no doubt, thought would 'shake' his uppity audience. Anyone with access to the Internet has already seen that ... and worse.
