Moebius

Director: Kim Ki-Duk
Year Released: 2013
Rating: 3.0

Psychosexual Freud-A-Go-Go! Kim goes back to his 'darker side' (seen in The Isle, among other works) as a wife (Lee Eun-Woo) discovers her husband (Jo Jae-Hyeon) is cheating on her with a shop clerk (again, Lee Eun-Woo, in a marvelous casting move) so she at first tries forcibly removing her husband's genitals and then goes after their son (Seo Young-Ju), cuts off his penis and devours it ... and then things get even more extreme (rape! reconstructive surgery! orgasm via pain! Oedipal adventures!). While too radical to be taken seriously, any movie that ventures this far out and takes this many risks (including omitting any spoken communication) and is this consistently outré deserves some kind of attention (especially since the director has made a good number of outstanding movies), as Kim is using graphic sensationalism to toy with the idea of dark undercurrents in human desire and the family dynamic. Cheating: it might lead to castration. Choose with discretion.
