On My Way
Director: Emmanuelle Bercot
Year Released: 2013
Rating: 1.5
Restaurant owner Bettie (Catherine Deneuve) - who lives with her mother - discovers her significant other is being a philandering jerk so, frustrated with life, she abandons her eatery and goes on the road, starting off looking for cigarettes, ending up in strange bars (with strange men) and eventually picking up her irritating grandkid (Nemo Schiffman) en route to a beauty pageant reunion. I can't imagine an actual road trip with The Deneuve would ever be this mechanical - it's a flimsy approximation of a post-midlife crisis for a woman who, let's be honest, never seems like someone who would be burdened by regrets (mostly because ... well, it's Deneuve, so casting might not have been optimal). Seeing her chase down her pouty grandson is a low moment - let the brat walk.
