Black Sunday
Director: John Frankenheimer
Year Released: 1977
Rating: 3.0
A disgruntled Vietnam Vet and former P.O.W. (Bruce Dern) volunteers to help terrorist organization Black September, led by Dahlia (Marthe Keller), in a plot to fly the Goodyear Blimp - filled with explosive darts - into the Super Bowl. While a bit slapdash in construction - with crude special effects - I think Frankenheimer and his screenwriting team (including Ernest Lehman, working from Thomas Harris' novel) do a nice job not only showing all the involved parties (including Robert Shaw's Israeli assassin) but noting that the actions of nations can create ruthless individuals like Dahlia, willing to kill innocent people for Palestine. Dern's character is over-the-top - an ill-advised parody of the war veteran with PTSD.
