In space, no one can hear Sandra Bullock grunt, moan and breathe heavily. Astronaut Ryan (Bullock) gets separated from her ship and her partner Matt (George Clooney) following a collision - she then has to spend the remaining running time floating around, grabbing onto metallic space bits and trying to find an escape pod in order to return to Earth. It's a purely visual, emotionally dead space simulation with (mostly) Bullock and (briefly) Clooney stuffed into space suits and grimacing in front of a green screen - of course, the effects are top notch, but one has to wonder how much of the movie's relative effectiveness is due to exquisite CGI as opposed to the 'traditional' components of filmmaking (acting, direction, screenwriting). We've come a long way since 2001, now, haven't we...?
