Simon Killer
Director: Antonio Campos
Year Released: 2012
Rating: 2.0
"Heartbroken" college grad Simon (Brady Corbet) decides to 'recharge' in a relative's flat in Paris, teams up with a prostitute (Mati Diop) and the two start blackmailing her clientele - he's also prone to moaning fits and (pathological) lying. Following around a sociopath is certainly not unique territory (I was reminded of Lodge Kerrigan's Keane crossed with Drive) and Corbet, more often than not, comes across as "acting" the role (quotation marks necessary) - it looks menacing and has a memorable soundtrack (nice digging up the Spectral Display track), though as time progresses and Simon's repeated acts of foolish immorality become stale so do Campos' penchant for randomly inserted flashbacks. Here's another instance of mental/personality disorders given a glossy cinematic treatment instead of a more probing examination: film school kids who are all show and no tell.
