A lowly short-order cook (Dudley Moore) is in love with a waitress (Eleanor Bron) but she won't return his affections - after a botched suicide attempt he gets a visit from the Devil Incarnate (Peter Cook) who offers to "help" the cook win the girl ... and show off his taste for bright red socks. A bit tacky (and with dated humor), appreciating this depends on how well one can tolerate Cook making a fool out of Moore by constantly cock-blocking him in his conjured fantasies - even at the end, with Moore re-acquiring his soul, he still can't land Bron, though at least he has a better appreciation for his lot in life. Cook and Moore were apparently a powerful comedic team back in the day, but this is not exactly the best showcase of their talents (despite both having a hand in the script) although there are a select number of memorable moments scattered throughout (nuns on trampolines, Cook's deadpan delivery during the Drimble Wedge & the Vegetations 'music video').
