Sleepwalk With Me
Director: Mike Birbiglia and Seth Barrish
Year Released: 2012
Rating: 1.5
Comedian Birbiglia recounts his early days trying to get started in the business, his relationship-of-convenience with his girlfriend Abby (Lauren Ambrose) and his horrifying sleepwalking disorder that led him to jump out a hotel window. While I'm familiar with Birbiglia's stand-up, his inexperience as a director is evident, as this comes across as a sub-Woody Allen movie about, well, Birbiglia's own neuroticism and his path to discover himself as a performer (by, essentially, riffing on his relationship issues). The bits with Birbiglia talking directly to the camera work better than the dramatized aspects, and are also considerably more amusing - his stand-up special "What I Should Have Said Was Nothing" reveals his dry, comedic sensibility in full, while this is essentially a teaser for his actual talents.
