Get the Gringo
Director: Adrian Grunberg
Year Released: 2012
Rating: 3.0
Pleasantly offbeat vehicle for Mel Gibson (who actually co-wrote the screenplay) that has his anti-hero character - only named "Driver" - tossed in a Mexican "prison" (that looks like a street market instead of a traditional three-hots-and-a-cot American-style setup) and how he gets in the middle of an elaborate plot involving a criminal syndicate inside the prison and how one super criminal needs a liver transplant (from a pre-teen boy with a smoking habit). The depiction of Mexico as an anything-goes den of sin isn't new, but it's Gibson - after all those real-life 'incidents' - that brings his trademark off-kilter charisma to this and makes it a scummy, wacky and frankly fun ride. Foster tapped into Gibson's personal problems for the much-maligned The Beaver - now he's back to being Mad Max.
