Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Director: David Gelb
Year Released: 2011
Rating: 2.0
Gelb heaps endless praise on master sushi chef Jiro Ono - widely regarded as the greatest in the world - and his life-long pursuit to perfect the art of making sushi as well as his forcing both his sons to follow in his footsteps. The images of the simply presented (and ridiculously expensive) plates should make anyone with a taste for Japanese cuisine incredibly hungry, but as a documentary it exhausts whatever it has to say around half-way through, with ample stylistic padding in the form of slow-motion shots and making Jiro glow in the sunlight like some divine entity. As a defense of elitism it would have benefited from a wider perspective.
