Scottish princess/tomboy Merida (Kelly Macdonald) rejects her parents' (well-intentioned) plan to wed her off to one of three lame-ass suitors and even goes so far as to bribe a witch into making her a spell that will get Mom to change her mind ... but all it does it is turn dear Mom into a bear. For a Pixar release - and because they set the proverbial bar so high in the past - this can't help but come across as a rather half-hearted effort with a serviceable (but still weak) 'plot' and a prerequisite number of cute asides (like Merida's three mischievous brothers) so I suppose its lasting effect will be for its coded support of an 'alternative lifestyle' - Merida, in a telling speech, claims she wants to "break tradition" and refuses to commit to a "normal" heterosexual pairing. In other words, the girl needs time to figure out who she really is. Godspeed, pretty redhead.
