Black Orpheus
Director: Marcel Camus
Year Released: 1959
Rating: 1.5
Bland retelling of the Orpheus story, but set in Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, and with a mostly all-black cast. That we are expected to like the main characters - who are one-dimensional and completely uninteresting - or the story - which turns a great story into a manic Soul Train - is ludicrous; it does not live up to its reputation, and is one of the many movies people speak highly of just because it shows a different lifestyle. The acting, for what it's worth, is painful - never have I heard so much fake, obnoxious, unending laughter.
