The Angelic Conversation
Director: Derek Jarman
Year Released: 1987
Rating: 1.0
Experimental feature by Jarman that was actually one of his favorite works, but the redundancy of the images (blurred, slowed-down shots of men swimming or rolling around together or in Christ-like poses and enveloped in fog) takes its toll after a while. Dame Judi reads several of Shakespeare's sonnets in voice-over, and her readings are fantastic, but it doesn't do much to add weight to what's supposed to be a movie about gay love, especially when it seems to be Jarman's intention to put the audience into some kind of trance from the monotony.
