During those nefarious Cold War years, a warning about an impending nuclear strike gets sent to an elementary school - they actually had such things, if it's (still) to be believed - and, not sure if the alert is real or not, the school principal (William Daniels) sends the kids home. It's a Message Movie and That Message is Obvious (war is bad) with the children given heavy-handed dialogue to repeatedly hammer at that Message - they talk about the future, why do they have to die, and get hysterical when need be. I'm guessing that final shot is supposed to leave things open-ended - is it the imagination or are those planes overhead out to kill, kill, kill - but as we know now, nothing happened, nothing happened.
