The Story of a Cheat
Director: Sacha Guitry
Year Released: 1936
Rating: 3.0
Guitry narrates (and narrates ... and narrates) this breakneck tale of swindling and hustling, starting with his fictional character's youth and moving all the way to his straight-and-narrow adulthood (ironically, criminals make the best security guards). It's almost as if (real-life) Guitry is making up this (not-so-real-life) tale as he goes along, lending it an impulsive, somewhat rambling but ultimately engaging feel - if he wasn't such a captivating figure, this would be insufferable. Guitry's the kind of guy you feel like would be the star of your dinner party but once he's got booze in him you'd have a hard time getting rid of him (to the point where he'd keep talking even after you turned the lights out).
