The Deep Blue Sea
Director: Terence Davies
Year Released: 2011
Rating: 3.0
A married woman (Rachel Weisz) is having a love affair with a pilot (Tom Hiddleston), much to the consternation of her (older) husband (Simon Russell Beale) - the affair is having a pronounced effect on her psyche, however, and she attempts suicide. Davies has always excelled at taking classically structured (and rather fundamental) storylines and lending them an air of poetic elegance, and this is no exception - Weisz, too, is outstanding, which is important because her emotional breakdown is the core of the movie. The ending is a downer, however, although not entirely unexpected - the moral seems to suggest that if you juggle two lovers you may end up with neither.
