Night and Day

Director: Hong Sang-Soo
Year Released: 2008
Rating: 3.0

A painter (Kim Yeong-Ho, doubling for Hong) goes to Paris with the intention of exploring the art world there, but gets sidetracked by smoking, eating oysters and trying to (successfully? unsuccessfully?) seduce three women. Basically a fish-out-of-water story done in Hong's trademark passive style - his lead is unable to create much of a connection to any of the ladies, the art of France or the city itself (Hong cleverly omits any images of the Eiffel Tower), eventually getting conned to return home to Korea by his wife (Hong's "heroes" don't exactly believe in monogamy). It isn't so much "funny" as "quirky," and as long as you don't expect some grand cinematic revelation from it, it should be a pleasant experience.
