It's Kind of a Funny Story
Director: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 1.0
A sixteen-year-old (Keir Gilchrist) with a severe case of The Sad checks himself into a mental hospital where he learns the valuable lesson that Other People's Problems are more Pressing than his. Smug and disingenuous, it writes off his one-week stay (oooh!) in the facility with some dodgy voice-over ("one week didn't fix me, I still have problems!") and compensate for its inherent grave-ness with frail attempts at humor courtesy of Zach Galifianakis' messed up hospital mainstay (sorry, Zach, you only work with what you're given). There's even an obnoxious 'fantasy sequence' with the crew of the hospital performing the Mercury-Eno-Bowie "Under Pressure" that should make almost everyone cringe. Emma Roberts is cute as Gilchrist's love interest (who, for whatever reason, likes to cut herself).
