Murders in the Rue Morgue

Director: Robert Florey
Year Released: 1932
Rating: 2.0

From the brilliant mind of Edgar Allan Poe comes this uninspired rendition of one of his most famous stories. Scientist/huckster Dr. Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) takes poor young ladies and tries injecting them with gorilla blood to see if there's a link between man and ape, while Dupin (Leon Ames) gives chase (mostly to save his girlfriend). Storytelling is not especially strong here and there's a lack of tension: the slim running time makes it a quick viewing, but a more accurate - and detailed - script would have done the dark genius some justice. But hey, those sets do look nice and spooky....
