The Adjustment Bureau

Director: George Nolfi
Year Released: 2011
Rating: 2.0

Youthful - and genuine - politician Matt Damon accidentally discovers there's a super-secret organization of omniscient Super Spooks that have the ability to control people's lives and even (!) keep two people away from each other, specifically Damon and love interest/ballerina Emily Blunt. With this absurd conceit it's really a B-grade Minority Report, but with the core structural problem of having to shift awkwardly between three genres - political statement, sci-fi adventure and romantic dalliance - and being successful at none of them. A spell-it-all-out speech by Terence Stamp reminds you what you're supposed to be taking from this (free will and the supposed power of a person to control his/her fate), but those Magic Fedoras and Magic Doors that can teleport people every which way clash with any 'rational' point the movie's struggling to make.
